Week 5 at KU: The Wiscandians see where the food comes from...

While mondays for most folks are the worst day of the week, it's the complete opposite for the Wiscandians. The Wiscandians toured the Roasterie, Sysco,  and the KU athletic facilities.

The Roasterie:
The Roasterie is local here to Kansas City and is fair trade coffee.  The process behind making a delicious pot of coffee was exposed on this tour.  It is actually air roasted coffee which is pretty uncommon.  Also another interesting fact is that they have "coffee bean hunters" that search the globe for the best beans available for each blend!  Here are some pictures from our cool tour.

Sysco..... talk about a massive grocery store! KU Dining's prime vendor is a tour the Wiscandians will never forget. This is the largest food distributor in North America. The Kansas City location is absolutely massive and words simply cant explain the efficiency and quantity that this warehouse produces. One of the freezer's alone was 100,000 square feet (No we did not add any extra 0's). They can also operate up to 80 forklifts at one given time.

Sysco is also a corporation that is trying to help out as many of their clients as possible. They have a chef that helps clients develop their menus, recipes, and food advertisements using all of Sysco's products. The Wiscandians had the privilege of having Chef Josh Powers treat us like one of his clients and show us sample recipes and menu options alongside the cost of each product and what Sysco products to use. If anyone decides to manage or own their own food service operation, the Wiscandians recommend SYSCO.

Garage door?  NOPE. Freezer door.

On top of the awesome Monday, we were able to see how KU incorporates fitness with nutrition by touring their athletic facilities and looking in on the behind the scenes work of Training Table.  A nutrition service provided to athletes on the KU campus.

Untile next week, the Wiscandians are signing off... Stay classy NACUFS interns.
